MOR-Bible,
which is by God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, God's grace,
unmerited divine favor, and peace, an absolute end of all strife
or trouble, be to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus
Christ, to the faithful in Christ Jesus.
We give thanks to God, the one supreme whom is the fountain of life
and light, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our Father,
praying always for you. We pray that you might walk worthy of the
Lord, our master, unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good
work, and increasing in the knowledge of God. May you be strengthened
and empowered with all might, according to His glorious power, by
believing in God's Word with all your heart, soul and strength.
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
This month's teaching is Super Conquering Living. We will
trace, track and search in the scriptures three (3) Greek words
and their English translation found in Romans 8:37. In this teaching,
we will understand:
-
The Greek word nikao used for the English word "overcome."
- The
Greek word nikee used for the English word "victory."
- The
Greek word hupernikao used for the English phrase "we are
more than conquerors."
- The
definition of the number one (1) in God's Word.
- How
to live a life of Super Conquering Living.
The
purpose of a Biblical word study is to determine the exact meaning
of a word or group of words as God used it in each context. We do
a word study of the Greek word used in the New Testament (Hebrew
for the Old Testament) rather than the English word, because we
are interested in the original Biblical usage of the word. Therefore,
we want to get back, as close as possible, to the original meaning
of the word.
Note:
The sources for all Greek-English words are Strong's Exhaustive
Concordance of the Bible, The Critical Lexicon and Concordance
to the English and Greek New Testament (Bullinger), Young's
Analytical Concordance to the Bible, The Word Study Concordance
by George V. Wigram and Ralph D. Winter, Bible
Hub, and Webster's Desk Dictionary of the English Language.
Let
us start with our review of Romans 8:37:
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors [hupernikao]
through him that loved us. [Bold added for highlighting.]
The
word Nay means No! The phrase we are more than conquerors
is the Greek word hupernikao which means to be more than
conquerors, to overwhelmingly conquer. It is from the Greek word
nikao meaning to conquer, to overcome, to prevail, to gain
victory. The root word nikee translates to our English word
victory.
There
is only one (1) usage of the Greek word hupernikao in the
King James Bible; it is Romans 8:37. When a word is used once in
God's Word, it is considered remarkably important. The number one
in God's Word denotes unity and beginning. The first appearance
of a word, even if it is used numerous times, gives us its crucial
and key meaning.
Let
us look at the usage of the word "One" where it always
means unity!
An example is found in Ephesians 4:4-6 [bold is used for highlighting]:
There
is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called
in one hope of your calling.
One
Lord, one faith, one baptism.
One
God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and
in you all.
The
phrase more than conquerors or hupernikao combines the common
Greek verb nikao (to overcome) with an intensive prefix (huper)
meaning beyond, over, above. The result is an image of victory so
overwhelmingly complete that the enemy is not merely subdued but
rendered powerless to threaten the believer's standing in Christ.
There is nothing the devil can do to take away our eternal life
(see Romans 6:23)! Being born-again, not of corruptible seed, but
of incorruptible, by the Word of God, which lives and abides forever
(see 1 Peter 1:23). Why? 1 John 3:2 tells us:
Beloved
now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we
shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be
like him; for we shall see him as he is.
Being
born-again, not of corruptible seed, but incorruptible, happens
by the Word of God, which lives and abides forever (see 1 Peter
1:23). People, we just do not understand how remarkable this is!
We are born-again of incorruptible seed! We are hupernikao
or more than conquerors!
Let
us read the context for Romans 8:37 by reading verses 34-35:
Who
shall separate us from [What?] the love of Christ? shall
tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness,
or peril, or sword?
As
it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we
are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
Verse
37:
Nay
[No!], in all these things we are more than conquerors
[huperhikao] through him that loved us.
I stand
in utter amazement at the greatness of what God has done for us
in Christ! Let us re-read verse 37 with understanding.
No,
in all these things [see verses 34-35] we are overwhelmingly super
conquerors through him, Christ, the anointed one, the Messiah,
that loved us the born-again believers.
The
next Greek word we will track, trace, and search for is nikao.
There are 28 usages of the Greek word nikao which means to
conquer, to overcome, to prevail, to gain victory. I exhort you
to read all 28 usages to gain a better understanding of the meaning
of the Greek word nikao. In the Bible, nikao is translated
to mean overcome (24 times), conquer (2 times), get the victory
(1 time), and prevail (1 time). We will review eight (8) usages
of nikao. Bold will be used to highlight the word.
The first usage is documented in Luke 11:22. We will include verse
21 to understand the context.
When
a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:
Verse
22:
But
[in contrast] when a stronger than he shall come upon him,
and overcome [nikao] him, he taketh from
him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.
The
next usage we will read is documented in John 16:33. We will read
verse 32 for context.
Behold,
the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered,
every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not
alone, because the Father is with me.
Verse
33:
These
things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace.
In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer;
I have overcome [nikao] the world.
Now
let us re-read verse 33 for a better understanding.
These
things [see verse 32] I, Jesus have spoken unto you, that in me
you might have peace, an absolute end of all strife or trouble.
In the world order, you shall absolutely have tribulation, mental
pressures: but in contrast be of good cheer. I have overcome
the world order.
Bless
the Lord, oh my soul! This so enriches my understanding of the context,
and the meaning of the words in the verse.
The next usage we will read is documented in Romans 12:21:
Be
not overcome [nikao] of evil but overcome
[nikao] evil with good.
God's
Word doubly established that we shall overcome evil with good
by using nikao twice in this verse. We, His children, are
to overcome (nikao) evil with good! It could not be plainer: God
tells us how to live a super conqueror life!
The next usage is documented in 1 John 2:13:
I
write unto you, fathers, because ye have [What?] known
him (God) that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young
men, because ye have [What?] overcome [nikao]
the wicked [malicious] one. I write unto you,
little children, because ye have [What?] known the Father.
The
next usage we will read is documented in 1 John 4:4:
Ye
are of God, little children, and have overcome [nikao]
them [the spirit of antichrist]: because greater is he
that is in you, than he that is in the world.
Now
let us re-read 1 John 4:4 with understanding.
You
are out from God, the one supreme whom is the fountain of life
and light, my beloved children and have overcome the spirit
of antichrist, because greater is God in Christ in you, than he
that is in the world order.
What
a great joy it is to study God's Word and read what remarkable things
He has done for us!
The final Greek word we will review is nikee. In the Bible,
there is one (1) usage of the Greek root word nikee which
means victory. There are also two more usages of the Greek word
nikao in this verse. As it is written in 1 John 5:4:
For
whatsoever is [What?] born of God overcometh
[nikao] [What?] the world: and this is the victory [nikee]
that [Does what?] overcometh [nikao]
the world, even our [What?] faith.
What
an extraordinary verse! The Greek word nikao was used twice
in this verse which doubly established that whosoever is born
of God shall conquer the world order and this is the victory!
God, our, Father wants His children to know that we already have
the victory! Why? Because we are His children! I stand downright
astonished at the greatness of what God has done for His children!
Now let us re-read 1 John 5:4 for a richer understanding.
For
whosoever is born of God, the One supreme, whom is the fountain
of life and light, overwhelmingly conquers the world order
and this is the victory that overwhelmingly conquers the
world order, even our believing.
The
Will of God is the Word of God! We as children of God must understand
that we are super-conquers (see Romans 8:37) because it is God in
Christ in us (see 1 Corinthians 5:19 and Colossians 1:27)! As it
is written in Ephesians 2:22:
In
whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through
the Spirit.
As
it is written in Philippians 2:13:
For
it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good
pleasure.
Now
that we have an understanding of the words nikao, nikee,
and hupernikao, let's understand how to take action to achieve
Super Conquering Living, our theme for this teaching. The
How of the Now is always believing (see February
2017 teaching. Romans 10:17 tells us:
So
then faith
[believing] cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
As
it is written in 2 Corinthians 5:7:
(For
we walk by faith [believing], not by sight).
Simplify
put, the more of the Word of God you hear and make your own, the
greater your believing! It becomes yours when you believe it with
the love of God in the renewed mind in manifestation and act upon
it (see March 2017 teaching).
Action is always the fruit of thought. Brothers and sisters, right
now you can believe to receive the promise by faith of Jesus Christ.
As it is written in Mark 9:23:
Jesus
said unto him [the father of the child], if thou canst
believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
[Bold added for highlighting.]
We
must confess God's Word and take believing action on what God's
Word declares, then we will manifest the results in our daily life.
As it is written in John 6:28-29:
Then
said they unto him [Jesus], what shall we do, that we might
work the works of God?
Jesus
answered and said unto them, this is the work of God, that ye
believe on him whom he hath sent.
Our
work of God is to believe on all that Jesus Christ accomplished
for us! Our action is always believing. I exhort you to read Hebrews
11 as it is a tremendous and magnificent chapter on believing. Read
about what these servants of God accomplished by believing (Hebrews
11:13). As it is written in Hebrews 11:6:
But
without faith [believing] it is impossible to please him [God]:
for he that cometh to God must believe [by senses knowledge]
that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently
seek him.
The
word "believe" is a verb which means action. Therefore,
believing the Word of God and practical application of the word
of God brings results. See February
2017 teaching for more on the topic of the How of the Now.
As it is written in Psalm 116:10:
I
believed, therefore have I spoken.
As
it is written in 2 Corinthians 4:13:
We
having the same spirit of faith [the faith of Jesus Christ],
according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken;
we also believe and therefore speak.
As
it is written in Ephesians 1:19:
And
what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who
believe, according to the working of his mighty power.
[Bold added for highlighting.]
The
exceeding greatness of his [God's] power to usward is
certainly not ours until we do what? Believe. If you doubt and worry,
if you have fear, then you are not believing. Fear is the only thing
that stops us from manifesting the Super Conquering Living we
already have in Christ! You must believe and confess "I have
conquered! I have overcome! I have prevailed! I have the victory
because of the God in Christ in me! Believing equals Receiving!"
Say it with me:
- I
have conquered!
- I
have overcome!
- I
have prevailed!
- I
have the victory because of the God in Christ in me!
- Believing
equals Receiving!
I invite
you to put these on sticky notes and put them on your bathroom mirror
or your computer so that you can make this your mantra. Remember,
if you think it, your actions will follow. Anytime you have doubt
or worry or fear, say these phrases. As you believe, it shall be!
This
month's teaching was on Super Conquering Living. We traced,
tracked, and searched in the scriptures three (3) Greek words used
for the English words found in Romans 8:37. We defined the Greek
word hupernikao used for the English phrase we are more than
conquerors, the Greek word nikao used for our English word
overcome, and the Greek word nikee used for the English word
victory. We also defined the number one in God's Word. We learned
how to live a life of Super Conquering Living by believing
God's Word and taking action.
To
be overwhelmingly super conquerors through him, Christ, the anointed
one, the Messiah, that loved us the born-again believers, we must
believe and confess we have overwhelmingly overcome the world order
through the new birth which is God in Christ in us. We must believe
and confess we have the victory in Christ! We should shout to the
heavens, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens
me! The Will of God is the Word of God! Believing equals receiving!"
Father,
we pray for more boldness to confess your Word and act on it in
our daily walk and talk. Thank you for making us super conquerors
by your gift of holy spirit in us. May we manifest the greatness
of your Word in our day-by-day walk as overwhelmingly super conquerors
in this life. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
In
the Lord,
