MOR-Bible,
which is by God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, grace, God's
unmerited divine favor, be to you and peace, an absolute end of
all strife or trouble, from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus
Christ to the faithful in Christ Jesus.
We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ and
our Father for His light that lighted each of His children. For
His Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path
(Psalm 119:105). Thanks be to God our Father that we have been delivered
from the power of darkness by the accomplished work of His son the
Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
In this month's teaching, we will perform a word study on the Greek
word phos used for our English word "light." We
will learn:
- God
is light.
- Jesus
Christ is light.
- We
are children of the light.
- The
way we can shine light in our lives and in others' lives.
According
to scriptures, light was created in the first day of creation (see
Genesis 1:3) before the sun was created on the fourth day (see Genesis
1:14-19). Genesis 1:2 tells us:
And
the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the
face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of
the waters.
As
it is written in Genesis 1:3:
And
God said, let there be light: and there was light.
The
first thing God, Elohim, the creator said was let there be light.
He got rid of the darkness, and God, the creator of the heaven and
earth and all things contained therein, spoke light into being.
In the Bible, light signifies purity, prosperity, honor, joy, and
all manner of happiness in this world and the next.

God
is light or phos.
As
it is written in 1 John 1:5:
This
then is the message which we have heard of him (God), and declare
unto you, that God is light [phós or the light], and in him
is no darkness at all.
The
word light is the Greek word phos. It comes from the
obsolete phao or to shine or make manifest. It is written
in Psalm 36:9:
For
with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.
The
light of God is so prevailing it puts the physical energy into all
things upon this earth. God, Elohim, the one supreme whom is the
fountain of life and light, is the source of all life and light.
Outside of God we shall not see light! God is what? Light! And in
him there is no what? Darkness at all. Where light shines there
is no place for darkness to exist. Darkness is the absence of light.
Oftentimes, in the Bible, darkness is used to represent a separation
from fellowship with God who is light! Darkness is not found in
the one true God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
Light
is the primary Biblical image for God's self-disclosure, moral purity,
saving truth, and transforming power. Wherever light appears, darkness
is either dispelled or exposed and a decisive movement toward life,
goodness, righteousness and truth are implied. Let's look at 1 John
1:6-10 starting with verse 6:
If
we say that we have fellowship with him (God), and walk in darkness,
we lie, and do not the truth.
In
this verse, darkness is anything contrary to God's Word!
And when we walk in darkness what do we do? We lie.
And as a consequence, we do not do what? the truth!
1 John 1:7-8:
But
if we walk in the light [phos - the light],
as he (God) is in the light [phos - the light],
we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ
his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
If we say that we have no sin [broken fellowship], we deceive
ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Once
we are born-again of God's Spirit, we have remission of sins and
are children of God. This occurs only once when we are born-again.
Now, as children of God, in our physical walk, we sometimes break
fellowship with God our Father. Continue with 1 John 1:9-10:
If
we confess our sins [broken fellowship], he [God]
is faithful and just to forgive us our sins [broken fellowship],
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
If
we say that we have not sinned [broken
fellowship],
we make him [God]
a liar, and his word is not in us.
To
be in fellowship with God is to have full sharing with God our Father.
God our Father knew that we would not always walk in the light,
that we would break fellowship with him at times. So, He lovingly
made a way for us to get back in fellowship with Him. Our fellowship
is sustained by faithfully exposing our minds to the light of God's
Word and acting on it.
Here's an example of what I mean. . . When I come into a room that
is dark and turn on the light switch, the darkness disappears. The
same thing happens when we preach and teach God's Word about salvation.
When a person believes God's Word on salvation (see Romans 10:9-10)
and confesses Jesus as Lord and believes in their heart that God
raised him from the dead, that person has been delivered from the
power of darkness and becomes a child of the light God (see 1 Thessalonians
5:5). That person is given citizenship in God's Kingdom by the accomplished
work of Jesus Christ (see Colossians 1:13). So, just as darkness
is dispelled by turning on a light switch, so is the darkness dispelled
when a person is born-again.
As it is written in Job 29:3:
When
his [Elohim] candle shined upon my head, and when by his light
I walked through darkness.
When
God's, Elohim's, light shined upon Job's head, Job walked through
darkness with the light of God. As it is written in James 1:17:
Every
good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down
from the Father of lights [phos - the light],
with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Jesus
Christ is light or phos.
Jesus
Christ described himself as the light multiple times in the
Bible. As it is written in John 8:12:
Then
spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light [phos
- the light] of the world: he that followeth me shall not
walk in darkness, but shall have the light [phos
- the light] of life.
Jesus
told the scribes, Pharisees, and other people gathered together
that he is the light or phos of the world.
As it is written in John 9:5:
As
long as I [Jesus] am in the world, I am the light
[phos - the light] of the world.
As
it is written in John 12:46:
I am come a light [phos - the light] into
the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in
darkness.
Jesus
came as the light into the world and whosoever believed on him would
not walk or abide in darkness. Without the light of Jesus Christ,
you walk and abide in darkness.
When
we look at all that is going on in the world today - lying, murder,
division, hatred - revenge, it is darkness. People who do these
things walk and abide in darkness because they have rejected the
light of God and His son the light of life, Jesus Christ! Remember
1 John 1:8:
If
we say that we have no sin [broken fellowship], we deceive
ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
People
who are born-again, but break fellowship with God by lying, committing
murder, seeking revenge, festering division, expressing hatred,
are in darkness. They deceive themselves that they are doing these
things in the name of God. God is NOT darkness, God is light. These
acts of darkness are committed by people who have broken fellowship
with God and are NOT in the light. They can't say they do hate or
lie or murder or revenge or divide people because God's Word tells
them to do these dark actions. I repeat myself: GOD IS LIGHT AND
IN HIM IS NO DARKNESS AT ALL!
The
first usage of the Greek word phos is documented in Matthew
4:16. We will read verse 17 for context.
The
people which sat in darkness saw great light [phos
- the light]; and to them which sat in the region and shadow
of death light [phos - the light] is sprung
up.
The
word sprung in this verse is the Greek word anatelló
meaning to rise, to spring up, to cause to rise. In this verse,
the people did not just see light, they saw great light!
The word light is used twice in this verse to double establish
the greatness of the light that sprung up! How did they see
this great light? Verse 17:
From
that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom
of heaven is at hand.
The
word preach is the Greek word kérussó
which means to proclaim, to preach, or to herald. The great light
in verse 16 was manifested by Jesus preaching the Word of the light
of God His Father! So, if we want great light and understanding,
we must understand God's Word!
We are children of the light or phos.
When
I confessed the Lord Jesus and believed in my heart that God had
raised him from the dead, then I was saved (see Romans 10:9-10).
Now, I am a child of the light (see Ephesians 5:8). Now, it is God
in Christ (see 2 Corinthians 5:19) in me the hope of glory (see
Colossians 1:27)! Beloved, now we are the sons and daughters of
God (see 1 John 3:2).
As
a born-again believer, we must let God's light so radiate in us
that not even one little gap of darkness remain in any place in
our life. As it is written in Ephesians 5:13
All
things that are reproved are made manifest by the light
[phos - the light]: for whatsoever doth make manifest
is light [phos - the light].
As
we read, re-read, study, and rightly divide God's Word and preach
and teach God's Word and operate the gift of holy spirit and the
nine manifestations (see 1 Corinthians 12:7-11), producing the nine
fruits of the spirit (see Galatians 5 :22-23), we are the light
of the world! Why? Because, we have God in Christ in us! The Word
of God is the light! God is light, His Word is Light, and through
Jesus Christ, we are children of the light.
As
it is written in Ephesians 5:1:
Be
ye therefore followers [imitators]
of God, as dear [beloved]
children.
God
is light (see 1 John 1:5) and therefore we imitate God as beloved
children of the light. God, who is light, has provided for us His
Word, which enlightened our eyes and illuminated the path we walk
in. Why? So that we can walk in fellowship with Him and His son,
the Lord Jesus Christ.
Let's
look at Ephesians 5:8-9. We will start with verse 8:
For
ye were sometimes darkness but now are ye light [phos
- the light] in the Lord [master]: walk as children
of light [phos - the light].
This
verse starts out by saying ye were darkness because we were
not yet born-again of God's Spirit. This is a figure of speech or
metaphor. The word is the same Greek word phos used for God
is the light in 1 John 1:5. This verse goes on to say now are
ye light in the Lord. We are light itself in the Lord who is
our master! The word walk in this verse in the Aramaic literally
means "therefore walk in like manner." In other words,
we walk in the light, in like manner, as the Lord, our master, did!
The phrase children of or "children out of" expresses
the relationship between the children and the quality of the light,
and that light is God (see 1 John 1:5)!
As it was written in Psalm 119:130:
The
entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding
unto the simple.
God's
Word gives us light and understanding as it enters
our hearts and minds. The word simple in this verse means
purehearted, like a child who is eager to learn. As children of
the light, we eagerly go to God's Word with a pure heart to read
it, study it, put it into our minds, and take actions aligned with
it. The entrance of God's Word gives us light and understanding.
If I want light and understanding, I must study God's Word with
a pure heart and renew my mind and manifest His Word in my walk
as a child of the light.
Let's
continue with Ephesians 5:9:
(For
the fruit of the Spirit [light] is in all goodness
and righteousness and truth).
The
word Spirit in this verse is the word "light."
The walk of children of light entails three things:
- Goodness:
Good, beneficial, virtuous and kindness, the quality of a person
who is ruled by and aims at the light rather than darkness.
- Righteousness:
The God-given justification whereby a person stands in the presence
of God without any consciousness of sin, guilt, condemnation or
shortcoming. We received righteousness when we were born-again
(see Romans 10:9-10).
- Truth:
True, truthful, genuine. The Word of God is truth (see John 17:17)!
When
we walk as children of the light, we manifest His goodness, righteousness,
and truth! It is written in 1 Thessalonians 5:5:
Ye
are all the children of light [phos - the light],
and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
The
way we can shine light in our lives and in others' lives.
There
are several ways we can impact our lives and the lives of others
by shining our light as children of God.
First,
we can preach and teach people that Jesus is Christ, the anointed
one, the Messiah, and is the son of God raised from the dead and
set down at the right hand of God his Father.
Secondly,
we can teach others how to be born-again of God's Spirit by confessing
Jesus as Lord and believing in their heart that God raised Jesus
from the dead (see Romans 10:9-10).
Thirdly,
we can study and rightly divide God's Word to dwell richly in the
light of God's Word. This is the way we can dispel the darkness
from our own life. At the same time, we can teach others how to
study and rightly divide God's Word in order to dwell richly in
the light of God's Word.
And
finally, we can talk and walk (act) according to God's Word. By
putting God's Word on in our hearts, our speech, and our walk, we
light up our area with the light of God's Word!
Four
actions we can take to shine our light in our life and in the lives
of others.
-
Preach and teach people that Jesus is Christ and the son of God.
- Teach
others how to be born-again.
- Study
and rightly divide God's Word and teach others how to do this.
- Talk
and walk God's Word by manifesting His goodness, righteousness,
and truth.
As
it is written in Philippians 2:15-16. We will start with verse 15:
That
ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke,
in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine
as lights in the world.
The
word lights in this verse is the Greek word phóstér
meaning light, luminary, and is from the Greek word phos.
We shine as luminaries in the world because of God in Christ in
us for all to see. We are the light of the world! We are like the
sun that lighted the earth and dispelled the darkness. We radiate
and flood every place with light because of the God in Christ in
us! We are the living Word of God! And how do we do this? Turn to
verse 16:
Holding
forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ,
that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.
It
is the Word of God in which we can shine as lights in the world.
As we rejoice in the day of Christ, we are children of the
light. As we study and rightly divide God's Word and teach others,
we dispel the darkness. As it is written in Acts 17:6:
These
[Paul, Silas and Timothy] that have turned the world upside
down are come hither also.
How
did they turn the world upside down? By preaching and teaching
the Word of God fully and clearly that Jesus is Christ, the anointed
one, the Messiah, is the son of God and that he was raised from
the dead and set down at the right hand of God his Father. When
the people, with one accord, believed the Word of God that was preached
and taught to them, the preachers and teachers performed miracles,
by operating the nine manifestations of the gift of holy spirit
(see 1 Corinthians 12:7-11).
To God be glory through Jesus Christ our Lord for giving such power
unto us! This is the way we manifest the light of God as children
of the light. I will repeat how this section started because I want
you to put this on in your heart. Turn these into ACTION ITEMS to
do daily:
First,
we can preach and teach people that Jesus is Christ, the anointed
one, the Messiah, and is the son of God raised from the dead and
set down at the right hand of God his Father.
Secondly, we can teach others how to be born-again of God's Spirit
by confessing Jesus as Lord and believing in their heart that
God raised Jesus from the dead (see Romans 10:9-10).
Thirdly, we can study and rightly divide God's Word to dwell richly
in the light of God's Word. This is the way we can dispel the
darkness from our own life. At the same time, we can teach others
how to study and rightly divide God's Word in order to dwell richly
in the light of God's Word.
And finally, we can talk and walk (act) according to God's Word.
By putting God's Word on in our hearts, our speech, and our walk,
we light up our area with the light of God's Word!
Four actions we can take to shine our light in our life and in
the lives of others.
- Preach
and teach people that Jesus is Christ and the son of God.
-
Teach others how to be born-again.
- Study
and rightly divide God's Word and teach others how to do this.
- Talk
and walk God's Word by manifesting His goodness, righteousness,
and truth.
As
it is written in 1 Thessalonians 1:5:
For
our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power,
and in the Holy Ghost [holy spirit], and in much assurance.
As
it is written in Ephesians 3:20:
Now
unto him [God] that is able to do exceeding abundantly
above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh
in us.
We
are currently living in a crooked and perverse nation filled with
darkness. Our nation desperately needs the light of God's Word.
We, as children of the light, must manifest God's light within us
outwardly for all to see. We are the light of the world! When people
see us, they must see the light of our Father's Word!
We preach and teach the Word of God wholly and plainly, that it
is God in Christ in us, the hope of glory. We are the children of
light and of the day. Each one of us can be a minister of light
by leading people into the new spiritual birth, therefore, bringing
light into that person in this world. We can teach others how to
receive into manifestation the gift of holy spirit and how to operate
the nine manifestations of the gift of holy spirit. We got this,
people. Let's go out and shine our light!
In this month's teaching, we learned that God is light and in
him is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). We learned that Jesus
Christ is the light of life (John 8:12). And we saw how we are children
of the light. Remember, when we confessed the Lord Jesus and believed
in our hearts that God had raised him from the dead, we were saved
(see Romans 10:9-10). Now, we are children of the light (see Ephesians
5:8). Now, it is God in Christ (see 2 Corinthians 5:19) in us the
hope of glory (see Colossians 1:27)! Beloved, now are we the sons
and daughters of God (see 1 John 3:2).
When we walk as children of the light, we manifest our Father's
goodness, righteousness, and truth! We must act as children of the
light, and teach, speak, and walk as God's children. We must shine
God's light to dispel the darkness in our nation. We must light
up so much that others will come to us and learn how to be born-again.
Let's get to work!
Father we are so grateful and thankful for your light that is eternal
within each of us. Father, we pray for more boldness to manifest
your light in our walk of life, holding forth your Word of life
so that people will see our good works and glorify you. For our
hearts' desire, as beloved children of the light, is to manifest
your goodness, righteousness, and truth. In the name of our Lord
Jesus Christ. Amen.
