MOR-Bible,
which is by God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, may God's
grace, unmerited divine favor, be to you and peace, an absolute
end of all strife and trouble, from God our Father and the Lord
Jesus Christ to the faithful in Christ Jesus.
Father, we are grateful and thankful for your Word which is pure,
perfect, and magnified by you. You cannot lie and your Word cannot
be broken. We pray that you grant unto your children more boldness
to speak your Word and to walk as children of the light. May we
confess your Word and perform signs, miracles, and wonders in the
name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
This month's teaching is on Living and Confessing God's Word.
We will:
- Search,
trace and track in God's Word the Greek word homologia
used for our English words "profession" and "confession."
- Define
the number six's (6) meaning in God's Word.
- Read
an example of Jesus confessing God's Word.
The
only way we can know God's Word and Will is from the Bible. The
Bible does not include the Word of God, it is the Word of God! We
must study the scriptures to show ourselves approved unto God, a
workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word
of truth (see 2 Timothy 2:15). Our passion and desire is to know
God, our Father's, Word and Will. As born-again believers, we want
to confess and manifest His Word with power in our daily walk. When
people see us, they should see a child of God living and confessing
His Word in all our actions and speech!
Note:
The sources for all Greek English Words are Strong's Exhaustive
Concordance of the Bible, The Critical Lexicon and Concordance
to the English and Greek New Testament (Bullinger), Young's
Analytical Concordance to the Bible, The Word Study Concordance
by George V. Wigram and Ralph D. Winter, The
Bible Hub, and Webster's Desk Dictionary of the English
Language.
It
is written in 1 John 3:2:
Beloved
now are we the sons of God.
If
you confess you are a son or daughter of God, then you are a son
or daughter of God. We as children of God must confess our Father's
Word! It is written in Romans 8:17:
And
if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.
God's
Word is our strength, refuge, and power! We all live by words, but
do we live by God's Word? We are what we are because of the words
we believe and make our own. Why not renew our minds (see Romans
12:2) to live by God's Word which is pure (see Psalm 12:6), perfect
(see Psalm 19:7), cannot be broken (see John 10:35), and cannot
lie (see Titus 1:2)? We should confess Romans 8:17 which says we
are an heir of God and a joint-heir with Christ. We should not confess
what we think we are nor should be confess what anyone else thinks
we are. What you confess is what you become. Keep confessing God
our Father's Word and it will become a reality in your life!
Let us search, trace, and track in God's Word the Greek word homologia
used for our English word profession and confession. There are only
six (6) usages of this Greek word in the New Testament. The number
six (6) in God's Word is the number for human imperfections. It
is the number of man without God and without Christ. The number
six (6) also denotes man's labor apart from God's rest.
In the New Testament, the word "profession" is the Greek
Word homologia which means confession, acknowledgment or
saying the same thing or an agreement. The context of the first
usage of homologia is about blessing, praise, and the benefits
of sharing of one's abundance for the ministering of the saints,
the born-again believers, the sanctified ones, the holy ones, or
the purified ones in the church of the body. We will bold the word
for homologia in the six (6) usages for emphasis.
First usage is documented in 2 Corinthians 9:13:
Whiles
by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your
professed [homologia or confession] subjection
unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto
them, and unto all men.
To
open our understanding of this verse, let us thoroughly explain
some of the Greek words used for our English words. The word "glorify"
is the Greek word doxazó which means to glorify, to
honor, to praise. In the Word of God, doxazó is used
to describe the act of giving honor and praise to God, acknowledging
His majesty, power, and divine nature. It also refers to the glorification
of Jesus Christ, particularly in the context of his resurrection
and ascension. The word "God" in this verse is the Greek
word Theos which primarily refers to the one true God, whom is the
fountain of life and light. See May
2021 teaching. The word "profession" is the Greek
word homologia meaning confession or acknowledgment. The
root word derives from the Greek verb homologeo meaning "to
confess" or "to agree."
When we put these Greek definitions together in this verse, we get
a clearer understanding. Let's re-read the verse:
Whiles
by proven character of the work of serving others they who share
of their abundance, give honor and praise to God, the one supreme
whom is the fountain of life and light for your confession and
submission unto the good news of Christ, the Anointed One, Messiah.
For your sincerity, and purity of intention, and intimate fellowship
and mutual participation in sharing of your abundance for the
ministering of the saints, the born-again believers, the sanctified
ones, the holy ones, the purified ones and unto all men. Bless
the Lord oh my soul!
We donate our abundance for the ministering of the saints, the
born-again believers, the sanctified ones, the holy ones, the
purified ones and unto all people. If we love God we give of our
abundance for the ministering of the saints.
The
second usage of homologia is documented in 1 Timothy 6:12:
Fight
the good fight of faith [believing], lay hold on eternal
life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed
a good profession [homologia] before many
witnesses.
The
word "fight" is the Greek word agónizomai
which means to strive, to struggle, to fight, to labor fervently.
The word "good" is the Greek word kalos which means
good, beautiful, noble, excellent, or honorable. And the word "faith"
is pistis or believing. See January
2021 and February 2021
teachings on pistis. The entire phrase hast professed
a good profession is the Greek word homologeó
which is from the root Greek words homos meaning the same
and lego meaning to say or speak.
Now, let's re-read this verse:
Labor
fervently, run a good race of believing, take hold upon, receive
into manifestation eternal life, whereunto thou art also called,
and confessed an excellent and honorable profession or acknowledgment
before many witnesses.
The
third usage of homologia is documented in 1 Timothy 6:13:
I
give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things,
and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a
good confession [homologia].
Here,
Paul gives the command in the sight of God, the one supreme
whom is the fountain of life and light who makes alive all things,
and before Christ, the anointed one and Messiah, Jesus,
the humble one who before Pontius Pilate (see Matthew 27:11-14)
testified a good confession. The verse becomes so much richer
when our understanding is enhanced by the literal Greek meaning
behind the words.
In the next usage of homologia in Hebrews 3:1, the verse
begins with the word "wherefore." In order to understand
the meaning, the previous verse must be read for the context. So,
we turn first to Hebrews 2:18 to understand what the "wherefore"
is referencing:
For
in that he [Jesus] himself hath suffered being tempted,
he is able to succour [to help, to come to the aid of, to
assist] them that are tempted.
Now,
we read Hebrews 3:1:
Wherefore [see Hebrews 2:18], holy brethren, partakers
of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest
of our profession [homologia], Christ Jesus.
When
we read this verse, we notice the phrase the Apostle and High
Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus. Hebrews is addressed
to Israel; as born-again believers, we are not Israel, but rather,
we are in the body of Christ! We do not require an High Priest.
Hebrews 1:1 clarifies this:
God,
who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto
the fathers by the prophets.
Hebrews
1:1 states unto the fathers, meaning Abraham, Isaac, and
Jacob, by the prophets which indicates the Old Testament
prophets of Israel. Going back to Hebrews 3:1 with the usage of
homologia, we can now understand that the Apostle and High
Priest of Israel profession was Christ Jesus.
The fifth usage of homologia is documented in Hebrews 4:14:
Seeing
then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the
heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession
[homologia].
Understanding
that Hebrews was written to Isreal, and we are in the body of Christ,
this verse clarifies that Israel's great high priest is Jesus
the son of God who passed into the heavens. This knowledge
allows us to hold fast to our confession of Jesus the Son of God.
The final or sixth usage of homologia is documented in Hebrews 10:23:
Let
us hold fast the profession [homologia] of
our faith without wavering (for he is faithful that promised).
In
this verse, the word "faith" is the Greek word elpis
which means expectation or hope. The word "wavering" is
the Greek word aklinés or unbending. And the word
"faithful" is the Greek word pistos or faithful,
reliable. Let's put this all together for a deeper understanding:
We
hold fast to our confession or agreement of hope without wavering
or unbending because our Father is faithful and reliable!
We
confess the Word of God rightly divided through this enriched understanding.
Let
us read one of the many examples documented in the Bible of Jesus
Christ confessing God's Word! In this way, we can increase our walk
and talk to align with God's Word. We can live God's Word through
our actions and speech.
When Jesus was tempted, what did he do? He said, "it is written"
and then quoted God's Word. He confessed God's Word rightly divided!
Turn to Matthew 4:3-10. We will start with verse 3:
And
when the tempter [devil] came to him [Jesus], he [the
tempter or devil] said, If thou be the Son of God, command
that these stones be made bread.
In
this verse, the first thing the devil said to Jesus was If thou
be the Son of God. The devil knew who Jesus was. But by saying
that phrase, the devil was trying to get Jesus to doubt that he
was the son of God. The devil uses the same tactics with us. When
that voice in our head (or other people) says "You really don't
believe this," or "A true son or daughter of God won't
want that" it is the devil tempting us to not align with God's
Word.
It is written in 1 John 3:2:
Beloved,
now are we the sons of God.
God's
Word plainly declares that Jesus is the son of God! And through
his resurrection and ascension we became sons and daughters of God.
These are words straight from God which we should confess (homologia)
daily and whenever that sneaky devil tempts us through our own thoughts
or through other people.
Let's continue with Matthew 4:4:
But
he [Jesus] answered and said, It is written, Man shall
not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out
of the mouth of God.
Jesus
set the example. When we are tempted, we must confess what is written
in God's Word! We say "It is written" and state the verse.
Matthew 4:5-6:
Then
the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on
a pinnacle of the temple,
And saith unto him [Jesus], If thou be the Son of God,
cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels
charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee
up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
The
devil knew God's Word when he tempted Jesus. But he would never
quote it rightly divided. See the teaching of February
2016 where the devil tempted Eve. In verse 6 above, the devil
took the quote out of context from Psalm 91:9-12:
Because
thou [David]
hast made the Lord (Jehovah), which is my refuge, even the most-High
[Elyon],
thy habitation.
There shall no evil befall thee [David],
neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
For he [God] shall give his angels charge over thee [David],
to keep thee in all thy ways.
They [his
angels] shall
bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a
stone.
What
was Jesus's response to the devil? He said, "It is written."
Read verse 7:
Jesus
said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord
thy God.
Jesus,
here, was telling the devil that he was taking God's Word out of
context and was tempting the Lord thy God. How many times
do you take the same action? It cannot be plainer, people. God's
Word gives us the path upon which to walk the talk and talk the
walk.
Let's continue with Matthew 4:8-10:
Again,
the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth
him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them.
And
saith unto him [Jesus],
All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and
worship me.
Then
saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written,
Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
The
Bible clearly shows us that the Word of God is the only thing that
backs the devil down! If you do not know God's Word rightly divided,
you cannot defeat the devil! This is why we read the Bible for understanding.
In this month's teaching, Living and Confessing God's Word.
We searched, traced, and tracked in God's Word the Greek word homologia
used for our English word profession and confession. There are only
six (6) usages of this Greek Word in the New Testament. The number
six (6) in God's Word is the number for human imperfections. We
read an example of Jesus confessing God's Word in Matthew as the
way to back down the devil.
We must remember the Bible does not include the Word of God; it
is the Word of God! We must study the scriptures to show ourselves
approved unto God, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly
dividing the Word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). When we renew our minds
to confess God's Word rightly divided, we have power in our life
in any situation. We can stand confidently and firmly according
to Ephesians 6:16:
Above
all, taking the shield of faith [believing], wherewith
ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
Father,
as dear children, we pray for more boldness to speak your Word and
do your will. We pray that we can walk in love and light as you
are. We pray that we can rightly confess (homologia) your
Word, back down the devil by saying It is written, and rightly quoting
your Word. We pray that we can be well pleasing and acceptable in
your sight. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
