And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the Ministry of Reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the Word of Reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

MOR-Bible, which is in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, peace to you and grace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. Father, we recognize, honor, and praise you for what you have done for us through the accomplishments of your only begotten son the Lord Jesus Christ. Father, thank you for giving us power in your son's name to cast out devils and heal all manners of sickness and diseases. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.

We continue with our study of 2 Timothy 2:15 by looking at the word "God," which is the Greek word, Theos. 2 Timothy 2:15 says:

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth [the Greek word aleethia].

"Theos" or God means a name reclaimed from the heathen and is used in the New Testament for the true God. However, having lost the meaning of the one God, it came to mean "a God" only one of the many gods. Hence it became necessary in N.T. gen., to distinguish it by the article "the," the God, the one supreme with whom is the fountain of life and light; and now, to know Him that hath called us out of darkness into His marvelous light, is "life eternal." He is "the fountain of life" and "in his light alone can we see light." In the Septuagint (the Greek version of the Hebrew Bible - Old Testament) Theos, is (with very few exceptions) the translation of the plural (Elohim). It is used frequently for Jehovah (see under "Lord"). The root word means (1) to be strong, powerful; (2) to take precedence, be first. (3) God as the mighty one, the one above all, the first, combining the idea of inspiring awe and adoration. See May 2021 and June 2021 teachings.

The sources for all Greek-English words are The Critical Lexicon and Concordance to the English and Greek New Testament (Bullinger) (1975) and Young's Analytical Concordance to the Bible (1982). Also used is The Word Study Concordance (George V. Wigram and Ralph D. Winter) (1972 and 1978).

In this month's teaching, we will search the scriptures for examples of the Greek word Theos for our English word "God." Theos occurs 1,343 times in God's Word as documented in Matthew through Revelation. We will focus our study on some of the scriptures which has the phrase "glorified God." The word "glorified" is the Greek word doxazo which means "to recognize, honor, praise; to bring to honor, make glorious, glorify, but strictly, to give anyone importance." The word God is the Greek word Theos or "the one supreme with whom is the fountain of life and light."!

1 Corinthians 6:20 says:

For ye are bought with a price: therefore, glorify [doxazo - recognize, honor and praise] God [Theos] in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. (bold added for emphasis)

Matthew 9:1-8 tells us:

And he [Jesus] entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city.

And behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith [believing] said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.

And behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.

And Jesus knowing their thoughts [by revelation from God] said, wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?

For whether is easier, to say, thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?

But that ye may know that the son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.

And he arose and departed to his house.

But when the multitudes saw it, they marveled, and glorified [doxazo - recognize, honor and praise] God [Theos], which had given such power unto men.

The multitudes recognized, honored, and praised the one supreme God with (Theos) whom is the fountain of life and light for giving such power to men!

This record is also documented in Mark 2 with added details that occurred. Let's look at Mark 2:1-12. For the context, we will read verses 1-11.

And again he [Jesus] entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.

And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.

Jesus preached what? The Word of God to them! Let's continue with Mark 2:3-5:

And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.

And when they could not come nigh unto him
[Jesus] for the press [of people], they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.

When Jesus saw their faith
[believing], he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.

What did Jesus see? He saw their believing. The answer is documented in verse four above and outlined as such:

  • They uncovered the roof where he (Jesus) was.
  • When they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.

Jesus saw their believing actions! Let's continue with Mark 2:6-12:

But there was certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,

Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?

And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit
[revelation from God] that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, why reason ye these things in your hearts?

Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?

But that ye may know that the son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)

I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.

And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified
[doxazo - recognize, honor and praise] God [Theos], saying, we never saw it on this fashion.

Who ministered the healing? Jesus. They were all what? Amazed and astonished! And they recognized, honored, praised and glorified God - Theos, the one supreme with whom is the fountain of life and light for the healing of the man sick of the palsy, saying we never saw it on this fashion! In this verse, the word "fashion" means "thus, on this wise, in this manner."

The next usage of Theos we will look at is in Luke 7:16. We will read verses 12-15 for context:

Now when he [Jesus] came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.

And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

And he that was dead sat up and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

And there came a fear [respect] on all: and they glorified
[doxazo - recognize, honor and praise] God [Theos], saying, that a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God [Theos] hath visited his people.

The word Theos appears in Acts 11:1, 9, & 17. We will read Acts 11:1-18 for context:

And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God [Theos].

And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision
[Israel] contended with him,

Saying, thou wentest into men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.

But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying,

I was in the city of Joppa praying and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me:

Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat.

But I said, not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth.

But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God
[Theos] hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven.

And behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Caesarea unto me.

And the Spirit bade
[revelation from God] me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover, these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man's [Cornelius] house:

And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter.

Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.

And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost
[holy spirit] fell on them, as on us at the beginning [see Acts 2:4].

Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

Please note, Peter never baptized Cornelius's household with water! Let's continue Acts 11:17-18:

Forasmuch then as God [Theos] gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God [Theos]?

When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified [doxazo - recognize, honor and praise] God [Theos], saying, then hath God [Theos] also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

Romans 1:21 shows us the next usage of Theos:

Because that, when they [ungodliness and unrighteousness of people] knew God [Theos], they glorified [doxazo - recognize, honor and praise] him not as God [Theos], neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. See February 2022 teaching.

We will look at Galatians 1:15, 20, & 24 for the next usages of Theos. We will review Galatians 1:15-24 to better understand the context:

But when it pleased God [Theos], who separated me [Paul] from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace,

To reveal his son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood.

Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia and returned again unto Damascus.

Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.

But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord's brother.

Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God
[Theos], I lie not.

Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia.

And was unknown by face unto the churches of Judaea which were in Christ
[the now glorified one].

But they had heard only that he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed.

And they glorified
[doxazo - recognize, honor and praise] God [Theos] in me.

In this month's teaching, we searched the scriptures for examples of the Greek word Theos for our English word "God." Theos occurs 1,343 times in God's Word as documented in Matthew through Revelation. The word God is the Greek word, Theos, which means "the one supreme with whom is the fountain of life and light." We also focused our study on some of scriptures that had the phrase "glorified God" in which the word "glorified" is the Greek word doxazo. This word means "to recognize, honor, praise; to bring to honor, make glorious, glorify, but strictly, to give anyone importance."

In the Gospels, when Jesus ministered healing, the people glorified God! When Peter taught the Word of God to Cornelius' household, the gift of holy spirit fell on them who heard God's Word and they glorified God! When the believers heard that Paul, who had persecuted them in the past now preached the faith which he once destroyed, they glorified God that was in him! To God be the glory, for what a great thing He has done for us through His son the Lord Jesus Christ!

Father, we glorify you in our bodies and in our spirit which belong to you. We recognize, honor, praise, and thank you for our life and for your love, power, grace, and light which you have given us through your son the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Bless your hearts. You are the best! We sure do love you!

In next month's teaching, we will review the word " workman" documented in 2 Timothy 2:15.

In the Lord,

Ministry of Reconciliation
Son of God through Jesus Christ
Ambassador for Christ
