MOR-Bible,
which is in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, peace to you
and grace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ and us.
Father, thank you for your Word which is made known. Thank you for
your Will for your children to have a more abundant life on this
earth. Thank you for your Word which tells us of our hope in Christ,
our authority in his name, and what we have in this life because
of his obedience to your Word. Father, we know that we were bought
with a price and therefore we glorify you, Father, in our bodies
and in our spirit which are yours. In name of the Lord Jesus Christ,
Amen.
In the November 2022 teaching,
we learned the Word of God was received by revelation, which is
word of wisdom and word of knowledge (see 1 Corinthians 12:8), and
by holy men and women of God who spoke as the holy spirit moved
them (see 2 Peter 1:21). We learned the mystery of Christ is:
- God
is in Christ (see 2 Corinthians 5:19).
-
Which is God in Christ in you, the hope of glory (see Colossians
1:27).
- In
whom we also are built together for an habitation of God through
the Spirit (see Ephesians 2:22).
We
then read some examples in God's Word to see how God's Word interprets
itself in the verse, chapter, context, and/or how it is used elsewhere
in God's Word. Based on this understanding, we can teach God's Word
to others and be accurate in the interpretation of God's Word. We
can let God's Word interpret itself in the verse, chapter, context,
and/or how it is used elsewhere in God's Word. We know 2 Timothy
3:16 instructs us that:
All
scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
In
this month's teaching, we will continue to search, trace, and track
in God's Word by looking at the phrases "needeth not to
be ashamed" and "rightly dividing" as
documented in 2 Timothy 2:15. These phrases will be bolded for emphasis.
Study
to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not
to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
The
sources for all Greek-English words are The Critical Lexicon
and Concordance to the English and Greek New Testament Bullinger
(1975) and Young's Analytical Concordance to the Bible (1982).
The Word Study Concordance by George V. Wigram and Ralph
D. Winter (1972 and 1978) was also used for reference.
Now let us search, trace, and track these two phrases in 2 Timothy
2:15. The phrase "needeth not to be ashamed"
is one Greek word anepaischuntos which means "not ashamed
of, having no cause for shame." The phrase "rightly
dividing" is one Greek word, orthotomounta.
It means "to cut straight, to divide right."
Let's start with the English word "ashamed" which
is the Greek word aischunomai meaning "to be ashamed."
The Oxford Dictionary defines "ashamed" as "embarrassed
or guilty because of one's actions, characteristics, or associations."
There are five usages of aischunomai in the Bible. We will
read the context to increase our understanding and believing.
Usage one of aischunomai is in Luke 16:1-3:
And
he [Jesus] said also unto his disciples, There was a certain
rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him
that he had wasted his goods.
And
he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of
thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no
longer steward.
Then
the steward said within himself, what shall I do? for my lord
taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am
ashamed [aischunomai
- to be ashamed].
Usage
two of aischunomai is in 2 Corinthians 10:3-8:
For
though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through
God to the pulling down of strong holds).
Casting
down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against
the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought
to the obedience of Christ;
And
having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience
is fulfilled.
Do
ye look on things after the outward appearance? if any man trust
to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this
again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.
For
though I [Paul]
should
boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given
us for edification [building
up],
and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed [aischunomai].
Usage
three of aischunomai is in Philippians 1:14-20:
And
many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds,
are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also
of good will:
The
one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add
affliction to my bonds:
But
the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the
gospel.
What
then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth,
Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.
For
I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer,
and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.
According
to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall
be ashamed [aischunomai],
but [in
contrast]
that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be
magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.
Usage
four of aischunomai is in 1 Peter 4:9-16:
Use
hospitality one to another without grudging.
As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same
one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any
man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth:
that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ,
to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which
is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings;
that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with
exceeding joy.
If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for
the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part
he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as
an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.
Yet if any man suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed
[aischunomai]; but let him glorify God on this
behalf.
And
usage five of aischunomai is in 1 John 2:23-28:
Whosoever
denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth
the Son hath the Father also.
Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the
beginning.
If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in
you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal
life.
These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce
you.
But [in contrast] the anointing [the gift of holy spirit]
which ye have received of him [God] abideth in you, and
ye need not that any man [that seduce you] teach [to
give instruction or direction] you: but as the same anointing
[the gift of holy spirit] teacheth you of all things, and
is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall
abide in him [it].
And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear,
we may have confidence, and not be ashamed [aischunomai]
before him at his coming.
We,
as children of God, are born-again of His spirit and are not ashamed
of our stewardship and our authority which the Lord has given us
for edification, our hope in Christ, and our suffering as a Christian.
We are to be not ashamed before Christ at his coming! (see 1 John
2: 28).
The phrase "rightly dividing" is one Greek word,
orthotomounta. It means "to cut straight, to divide
right." The Greek word orthos which means upright or
straight is a form of the Greek word orthotomounta and it
has two usages.
Let's look at Acts 14:8-10. We will read verses 8-9 for context.
And
there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being
a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked:
The same heard Paul speak [God's Word]: who stedfastly
beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith [believing]
to be healed,
Said with a loud voice, Stand upright [orthos -
straight] on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.
Hebrews
12:11-13 has the second usage of orthos:
Now
no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous:
nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness
unto them which are exercised thereby.
Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;
And make straight [orthos] paths for your
feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let
it rather be healed.
In
God's Word, the word orthos means upright and straight. The Greek
root word for orthotomounta is temno or to cut. There
is only one usage of this in God's Word.
Hebrews 4:12:
For
the word of God is quick [living], and powerful [energetic],
and [the Word of God] sharper [temno - to cut]
than [above] any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing
asunder of soul [natural life] and spirit [spiritual
life], and of the joints and marrow, and [the Word of God]
is a discerner [the Word of God is the critic] of the
thoughts and intents of the heart [the mind of man].
God's
Word separates truth from error in our lives. God's Word is our
life! We need God's Word more than our necessary food to live! We
are to have one mind, one heart, one stand for the truth, and one
Word to speak! Therefore, we are not to be conformed to this world.
God's Word tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds,
so that we can prove what is the good, acceptable, and perfect Will
of God (see Romans 12:2).
In this month's teaching, we searched, traced, and tracked two phrases
in 2 Timothy 2:15. The phrase "needeth not to be ashamed"
is one Greek word anepaischuntos which means "not ashamed
of, having no cause for shame." The phrase "rightly
dividing" is the one Greek word, orthotomounta.
This word means "to cut straight, to divide right."
We reviewed the Greek word for our English word "ashamed"
which is aischunomai which means "be not ashamed."
We reviewed all five usages of aischunomai that appear in
the Bible. We learned that we, as born-again children of God, are
not ashamed of our stewardship and our authority which the Lord
has given us for edification, our hope in Christ, and our suffering
as a Christian. We are not to be ashamed before Christ at his coming
(see 1 John 2: 28). Through this teaching, we learned that God's
Word is quick, living, powerful and energetic. It must be cut straight
(temno) and divided right (orthos - upright and straight)!
We thank God always on your behalf for the grace of God is given
to you by Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:5 tells us that in everything
you are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge.
Father, we are so thankful and grateful for what you have given
us by the accomplishments of your only begotten son's birth, walk,
death, resurrection, and ascension. When we right divide your Word
and act on it, we are not ashamed of you or your son the Lord Jesus
Christ. We glorify you, Father, for your Word is living and energetic.
Your Word, Father, is sharper than any two-edged sword. Your Word
pierces even to the dividing asunder of natural life and spiritual
life, and of the joints and marrow. Your Word, Father, is a critic
of the thoughts and intents of our minds. Father, as we cast down
imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the
knowledge of Your Word, we bring into captivity every thought to
the obedience of Christ. In doing so, we have the mind of Christ
and can absolutely do the works of Jesus Christ. In the name of
the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
Our holiday prayer for you is from Ephesians 2:16-23:
We
cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my
prayers.
That [purpose] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father
of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation
in the knowledge of him.
The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may
know what the hope of his calling is, and what the riches of the
glory of his inheritance in the saints.
And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who
believe, according to the working of his mighty power.
Which he wrought in Christ [the now glorified one], when
he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand
in the heavenly places.
Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion,
and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also
in that which is to come.
And hath put all things under his [Christ] feet and gave
him [Christ] to be the head over all things to the church.
Which is his body, the fulness of him [Christ] that filleth
all in all.
Glory
to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men
(all people) (see Luke 2:14). Bless your hearts! You are the best!
We love you! Have a blessed Christmas holiday.

the Lord,
