And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the Ministry of Reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the Word of Reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

The May article discussed all five records of receiving the holy spirit. We saw that once the Apostles and disciples had the Word of God, they acted upon it immediately and exactly, carrying out God's instructions. We discussed some of the common attributes of the five records of receiving the holy spirit: The Apostles and disciples all were in one accord, agreeing together, quiet, praying, ministering and listening to God's Word being taught.

This month's teaching will focus on the benefits or profit of speaking in tongues. in 1 Corinthians 12:7, it is written:

but the manifestation of the spirit [the pneuma] is given to every man to profit withal.

The word "manifestation" means "shown forth in the senses world or evidenced." The reason the word "manifestation" is in the singular usage, although there are nine in number, is the same reason the word "fruit" is singular in Galatians 5: 22-23, and yet there are nine fruits listed. So, we have one gift with nine diverse manifestations or evidences.

Notice that "the manifestation of the spirit is given to every man to profit withal." Remember the gift is given to every man and woman, but since the gift is spirit, it comes into manifestation only when the individual believes in their ability to operate these manifestations. The receiver must do the speaking in tongues (one manifestation), the interpreting of tongues (another manifestation), and the operating of the other seven manifestations.

The receiver, by their own freewill, must move his or her lips, tongue, throat and form the words and make the sounds. But what you speak is as the Spirit gives you utterance. In other words, your speaking is your action, but what you speak is God's action!

Of the nine manifestations listed in I Corinthians 12, only speaking in tongues is the one that builds up your spirit. Remember John 3:6 tells us:

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

You cannot build your spirit up by eating steak and potatoes. You build up your spirit by the manifestation of speaking in tongues. Let's look at Ephesians 3:16:

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man.

The word "might" is dunamis or potential power. The word "strengthened" is the verb form of "kratos" or power brought forth with an impact. The words "inner man" refers to Christ in you, the hope of glory. The word "Spirit" is the gift of holy spirit.

How are you strengthened with might by God's Spirit in the inner man? Let's look at 2 Corinthians 4:16:

For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

The words "outward man" refers to the body, soul man. The word "perish" is the process of getting older. The words "inward man" refers to the gift of holy spirit. How does the inward man get renewed day-by-day to build up that "inner man" or spirit? Let's look at Jude 1:20:

But ye, beloved [born again Christian], building up yourselves on your most holy faith [the gift in you], praying in the Holy Ghost [holy spirit].

We renew our inward man day-by-day by speaking in tongues. The only manifestation for praying in the Holy Ghost (holy spirit) is speaking in tongues. This is how you build up that spirit that's in you!

The purpose of operating the manifestation of the Spirit is for profit or benefits to the individual and to the body of Christ. I Corinthians 12:7: states this:

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

There are 18 benefits of speaking in tongues to the individual and to the body of Christ. The list below provides the specific benefit and the chapter(s) and verse(s) which illustrate this.

To speak the wonderful works of God Acts 2:11: Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
Infallible proof that God raised Jesus Christ from the dead and sat him at His own right hand Acts 2:32-33: This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore, being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
To magnify God Acts10:46: For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.
Quicken the mortal body Romans 8:11: But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
To open your heart to the Father Romans 8:14 -15: For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Galatians 4:6: And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
To have the Spirit bearing witness with our spirit Romans 8:16: The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.
To know that you are joint heirs with Christ Romans 8:17: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.
To pray perfectly Romans 8:26 - 27: Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Zephaniah 3:9: For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent.
To declare Jesus as Lord in your life 1 Corinthians 12:3: Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
To speak to God divine secrets 1 Corinthians 14:2: For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries [divine secrets].
To edify you 1 Corinthians 14:4: He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself and Jude 1:20 But ye, beloved [born again Christian], building up yourselves on your most holy faith [the gift in you], praying in the Holy Ghost [holy spirit].
To gives thanks well 1 Corinthians 14:17: For thou verily givest thanks well.
To be a sign to unbelievers 1 Corinthians 14:22: Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not. Mark 16:17: And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues.
Rest to your soul Isaiah 28: 11-12: For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, this is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing. 1 Corinthians 14:21: In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
To bring a message directly from God to the people, when interpreted 1 Corinthians 14:4-5, 13, 27-28:
He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interprets, that the church may receive edifying.
Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray
[believed] that he may interpret.
If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let
[each] one interpret.
But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
Produces fruit of the spirit Galatians 5: 22-23: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Proof of a new body in the future Ephesians 1:13-14: In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
To strengthen you with might in your inner man Ephesians 3:16: That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man. 2 Corinthians 4:16: For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

These are some of the profits or benefits of speaking in tongues to the individual and to the body of Christ. Look at all the benefits we have as a result of speaking in tongues! We can now understand how fantastic this manifestation is! It builds up your spirit - your inner man.

In summary, we discussed some of the benefits and profits of speaking in tongues. It's to speak the wonderful works of God. It's infallible proof that God raised Jesus Christ from the dead and sat him at His own right hand. It's to magnify God. It quickens the mortal body. It's to open your heart to the Father. It's to have the spirit bearing witness with our spirit. It's to know that you are joint heirs with Christ. It's to pray perfectly. It's to declare Jesus as Lord in your life. It's to speak to God divine secrets. It's to edify you. It's to give thanks well. It's to be a sign to unbelievers. It's rest to the soul. It's to bring a message directly from God to the people, when interpreted. It produces fruit of the spirit. It's proof of a new body in the future. It's to strengthen you with might in your inner man.

Brothers and sisters, if you are not speaking in tongues daily you are missing the benefits and profits that God made available through the accomplished works of Jesus Christ. This is the only manifestation that builds up that spirit that is within you. The gift is the complete package in you. You have the gift of holy spirit - the God-given ability to speak in tongues. The act of speaking in tongues is the manifestation. I entreat you to have an unlimited time rejoicing in this capability to bring forth God's energized strength into powerful manifestation in your life. To God our Father and the father of our Lord Jesus Christ be the glory, for great things He has done through His only begotten son. He has given us His spirit which has nine manifestations so we can walk with great power in this day and time. Remember James 1:17:

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Next month's teaching will focus on our five Son-ship rights we have in Christ.

In the Lord,

Ministry of Reconciliation
Son of God through Jesus Christ
Ambassador for Christ
